MYKITA + PERLON

MYKITA partners with Perlon Records for the release of a custom eyewear design, marking the 20-year anniversary of the Berlin-based label. The resulting sunglass model PERL 115 represents the minimalistic and experimental sensibility that connects the two labels.

Thomas Franzmann (Zip), Markus Nikolai and Chris Rehberger are the founders behind the vinyl-only label that has become one of the most influential names in German dance music. Markus Nikolai has been a champion of MYKITA design since its inception in 2003 through his store MNO (Markus Nikolai Optic) in Frankfurt: “MYKITA is more than a company for me – it’s friends,” says Nikolai. Collaborating on a custom frame that brings the respective design languages of MYKITA and Perlon together fulfils a long-time wish.

Sunglass model PERL 115 is a characteristic MYKITA stainless steel frame in a navigator style with a subtly polygonal lens shape and bicolour surface design. Developed in close collaboration with designer Chris Rehberger, also the founder of creative agency Double Standards, the unique shape of the lenses originates from the Perlon logo typeface. All the individual letters have been layered, rotated and melded to form one absolute outline. The two-toned surface pattern stems from cropping the Perlon logo, a reference to the label’s iconic record sleeve designs.

PERL 115 comes limited to 50 pieces per colourway, including Silver/Black, Shiny Copper/Black and Shiny Graphite/Orange. An exclusive limited edition package pairs the sunglasses with PERL115, a 7-inch single by Markus Nikolai featuring sounds from the modern manufactory – it is the 115th release from the house of Perlon.

Pre-launching exclusively at the Andreas Murkudis concept store in Berlin on 15 September, the MYKITA + PERLON set will be available in selected MYKITA Shops and opticians worldwide, as well as the MYKITA E-Shop and DoubleStandards.net from the start of December.
